Molise is a region of Southern Italy and it is divided into two provinces – Campobasso and Isernia – and has a total population of 305,617 inhabitants (as of 2019).
Each region of Italy is divided into provinces, just like the states of the U.S. are divided into counties. A province (provincia) is an administrative division of intermediate level between a municipality (comune) and a region (regione).
Molise is the youngest Italian region (until 1963 it was part of the Abruzzi).
Its mountainous landscape in the Apennines is succeded by the hills, and the land becomes increasingly lower as it approaches and meets the Adriatic sea, which has charming and picturesque beaches.
The array of hills and mountains, stretches within a few kilometers of the coast, making communications difficult and creating a state of isolation – and at the same time that unique atmosphere that makes it one of the most authentic and out of the beaten paths regions of Italy!
